Celebrating 20 years of LifeSmarts

attention open in a new window

And the 2014 LifeSmarts National Champion is…New Hampshire. First timers to the LifeSmarts Nation Championship, Mascoma Valley Regional High School from Canaan New Hampshire, beat out 33 other teams from around the country to claim this year’s LifeSmarts crown.

Consumer savvy teams that won statewide LifeSmarts tournaments attended the four-day championship held in Orlando, Florida. The top eight teams and individual winners all received scholarships and prizes. Check out all of the individual and state winners here.  Special recognition was given to Decklan Cerza (PA) for winning Student of the Year, Gayle Murdock (TX) for winning Coach of the Year, and Merilee Thoenen (MO) won Coordinator of the Year honors.

At this year’s championship, LifeSmarts also celebrated the first-year of the LifeSmarts Safety Smart Ambassador Program. This program gives LifeSmarts participants the opportunity to go into elementary classrooms around the country to teach lessons about health and the environment to the next generation of savvy consumers. More than half of the teams that made it to the national championship served as ambassadors teaching more than 1,800 students nationwide. Timon from the Lion King, the star of the Safety Smart Ambassador lessons, even made an appearance at the National Championship snapping pictures with LifeSmarts students.

Next year’s championship will be in Seattle, Washington. Schools will start competition online at the beginning of the 2014 school year in the hopes of outlasting their fellow state competitors.
